Summary:

To develop our quantitative capabilities, we are seeking a scientist to help deliver solutions across very diverse data sets. We are seeking a candidate with strong expertise in statistics, data analytics, and computational biology. The scientist will be primarily responsible for delivering actionable insights from our proteomic biomarker program with involvement in projects ranging from medical imaging to patient digital phenotyping, and other data collection sources to be defined. The ideal candidate should be data-driven with a strong biological foundation, as well as good collaboration, documentation, and communication skills. Our mission requires constant iteration of the company’s approach to both biology and data science as well as passion to work in a regulated healthcare environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Build predictive models across multiple areas of interest (biology, biomarkers, medical imaging, symptom reporting, wearables, x-omics, etc…)
  • Accountable for the development of data analytics tools, predictive models, emergent insight capabilities, and population health statistical models that make use of complementary and complex data sets.
  • Use statistical/scientific computer languages to draw actionable insights from large data sets
  • Generate data-driven hypotheses about underlying disease etiology in order to probe biological processes

Technical Skills:

  • Minimum:
    • Experience with biostatistical analysis of large scale proteomic and/or genomic data sets
    • Preparation and presentation of journal manuscripts, research papers, posters, at scientific and academic conferences
    • Experience with supervised and unsupervised machine learning approaches, including but not limited to classification, regression, clustering models and other forms of anomaly detection/pattern recognition
    • Direct experience with coding in one or more languages: Python (preferred), R, MATLAB, etc.
    • Comfortable dealing with dimensionality reduction, cross validation, and optimization of small datasets with experimental uncertainty and statistical noise.
    • Experience interpreting biological statistics and translating them to clear relationships of clinical outcomes for medical and research stakeholders.
    • Self-driven and intellectually curious to solve challenging problems
    • Collaborate with multiple teams (internally and externally)
    • Strong team player willing to learn new platforms and tools
  • Preferred:
    • Statistical analysis plans for clinical study and trial design
    • Familiarity with brain neurophysiology, inflammatory processes, and the human immune system

Qualifications

  • Minimum:
    • Master of Science in Computational Biology or in a related science, technology, engineering, or pure/applied math discipline
    • Experience and passion to work in a fast-paced agile engineering environment and start-up (10-40 employee size)
    • Dedication and perseverance to find insights and data-driven predictive solutions
  • Preferred:
    • A background in computational and/or systems biology

We have a CAP Accredited Laboratory and have developed a hybrid immunoassay-qPCR test for deployment as a Laboratory Developed Test.

 

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) will be responsible for performing moderate and high complexity laboratory testing on patient specimens, performing quality control and quality assurance procedures, analyzing data, interpreting results, and complying with all applicable local, state, and federal laboratory requirements. The work requires keeping meticulous and organized records, excellent attention to detail, effective written and verbal communication skills, ability to multitask, be flexible with schedules, and work both independently and in a team environment to deliver high-quality results in the most efficient manner.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform moderate and high complexity laboratory tests according to approved policies and procedures for all phases of testing; pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytical.
  • Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Maintain records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are successfully tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Being proactive in identifying issues that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and working directly with the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director to troubleshoot and implement process improvements.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
  • Participating in instrument validations, proficiency testing and quality assurance activities.
  • Develop and/or revise laboratory documents including policies, procedures, and forms.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams responsible for securing CLIA certification, CAP accreditation, and state licensure for the Octave Clinical Laboratory, including compliance with all applicable standards and regulations.
  • Assisting the technical supervisor in method-verification studies and validation of laboratory-developed tests.
  • Participating in the monitoring of the inventory of clinical laboratory supplies and materials.
  • Providing direct and constant supervision of laboratory assistants.
  • Comply with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations governing clinical laboratory operations including maintaining confidentiality of personal health information (PHI).

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science in Biomedical Laboratory Science, Clinical Science, or related field.
  • Must possess a current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Generalist) license.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a clinical laboratory setting; preferably with experience in a high complexity molecular testing environment.
  • Experience in immunoassay techniques preferred.
  • The ability to accurately pipette in plate-based assays.
  • Flexibility of work schedule to meet the needs of Octave’s Clinical Laboratory.

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) will be responsible for supporting Clinical Laboratory Scientists and Lab Management in the daily operations of Octave’s Clinical Lab. Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Clinical Laboratory Assistants will be responsible for:

  • Receiving and accessioning samples.
  • Data entry and quality check of patient and sample information in the laboratory information management system (LIMS).
  • Prepare and aliquot samples for testing.
  • Archiving and retrieving samples.
  • Post-accessioning quality checks of data entry and received documents.
  • Performing a variety of laboratory and administrative tasks to support the clinical laboratory staff in the CAP Accredited Octave Bioscience laboratory.
  • Performing laboratory duties under direct and constant supervision of a licensed CLS or the General Supervisor and/or designee, who provides specific instruction regarding how tasks are to be completed and defines the steps to be performed.
  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance tasks and setting up consumables in preparation for laboratory testing.
  • Participate in materials management activities including inventory tracking, ordering, receiving, unpacking, documentation and labeling of consumables and reagents, and stocking work areas.
  • Following established protocols and identifying issues that may affect assigned duties, correcting problems or escalating them as needed to a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Clinical Laboratory Supervisors, or the Lab Director.
  • Comply with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations governing clinical laboratory operations including maintaining confidentiality of personal health information (PHI).
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science in Life Sciences or related fields (Preferred)
  • Laboratory Experience: 2 year (Preferred) including but not limited to customer service, specimen processing, and laboratory assisting in a hospital or reference laboratory setting.
  • Experience with accurate data entry of sensitive information in a mid to high throughput setting.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Experience preferred:
